Before I started homeschooling in earnest, I spent a lot of time reading about homeschooling. I still do, but not as much, now that I’m a little bit busy all day. One of the most common things I saw was how everybody was just so relaxed about their attire, and school in pajamas seemed to be a common theme. I thought that sounded a little (sorry) lazy, so I’ve only tried it a few times, just to see how it went.
I was right. It’s lazy. The few times I’ve allowed the kids to go all day in pajamas, I got exactly what you’d expect from such lenience: utter chaos. I have no doubt that there are people in this world who have the kind of self-discipline it takes to get work done while still in their sleeping-clothes. I am not one of these people. I need signals, folks. Pajamas mean sleep. Shoelessness means relaxation. Day-clothes, right down to the shoes, are pretty much the only way I can convince myself that it’s daytime and there’s work to be done.
Besides, it’s a respect thing. I respect my family enough to put on some clothes and look alive for them. I respect my neighbors and the mail lady enough to care what they think of our family. I respect myself, and don’t want to live my life as if I were in a dream. There’s a whole world out there! I want to be ready to run out and meet it when the mood strikes.
Not that I haven’t forgotten to dress a child or two every now and then, but as a rule, we wear clothes. Granted, sometimes they look like this:

But they are at least dressed.

Cindy, I’ve been involved in the homeschool movement a long time (22 years) and although I’ve heard a lot of families talking about the fact that they *can* school in their pajamas, I’ve never met a family that actually did on a regular basis. I guess just knowing that you *could* makes homeschooling delectable.
We’ve had pajama days, when it was cold and rainy and we cuddled up to watch a movie, but we’ve never managed to do schoolwork on those days. When we do school, I like to have the girls completely dressed, with their hair combed out of their faces so they will sit up and give me their very best. You’re right: It is a matter of respect.
Cindy-
I couldn’t agree with you more! If the clothes help to “make the man.”….they can help to make the student too! – LOL
BTW – I just nominated Get Along Home as my favorite Homeschool Opinions Blog over at The Homeschool Post. I hope you win!!!
Blessings,
Sue
Isn’t it great to have the flexibility to allow our children to be cowboys some days! Love your post…and agree…I get more work out of my kids (and me) when we are dressed!
I love the Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Carrib look–it makes me sooo proud
. I can’t imagine going a day without changing into day clothes (of course, I don’t have children–yet).
You’ll go without changing clothes a few times, but only because you all caught viruses at the library. Curses on whoever decided that libraries should include Thomas the Train tables.
The photo/comment cracks me up! I think I’m similar – no pjs. But anything else pretty much goes…
Cindy! We have a hat, eye patch, & dino t’s floating around our wardrobe set, too! We’d blend well! Blessings! Susan
That is a precious picture! I think we’re the same way – nice to know that we COULD school in PJ’s, but in reality, we never do (unless mommy is having a bad day … kids still get dressed though!)

I like for us to be dressed too. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, but generally, that’s what I shoot for!
I love the pirate picture!

I agree! One of the things I’ve learned being a stay-at-home mom is that I am much more productive if I get dressed (though we don’t do shoes inside at our house). I will occasionally allow a “jammie day”, but those days are “lazy days” at our house – curled up with books and movies. Getting dressed each day definitely sets a tone for productivity!
