A while back, I wrote a post kicking around the idea of actually blogging, instead of just promoting other people’s giveaways. Since I
felt led to say more than just “enter here to win a piece of pie from Mama’s Best Bakery”, I bought a domain and jumped in. I’m not the most prolific blogger alive, but I’m convinced I have enough to say to keep this blog going for a while. I’m sure I can keep up my leisurely pace of one to three posts per week. (Incidentally, can really prolific bloggers be considered “alive”? Don’t you have to leave your desk to really live? Don’t you need to go do something to have something to blog about? All very existential bloggy-type questions, which have nothing to do with the topic at hand.)
Since I’m enjoying myself so much, and since I have, to date, a whopping 150 subscribers according to Feedburner–more than I ever dreamed of, even if it isn’t much to a real blogger–I’ve decided to actually put some time and effort into this blog. I’m curious how many readers I could get if I put an effort into it, so I’m going to work at it for a while. You know, if I feel like it. (Still doing that underachiever thing. Can’t help it.)
So far, I’ve put a couple hundred dollars and many hours into this blog. I’ve paid for a theme. Despite the fact that there are many free options out there, I’ve paid for hosting and a URL. Furthermore, my time is worth something–just ask my kids. Given the amount of money, time and energy I’ve put into it, I don’t think it would be expecting too much to try to get this site to pay for itself. I’ve decided to join an ad network or two, and also sell ad space independently. Even if I don’t make a profit (almost a certainty), I’d like my hobby to take less of my husband’s hard-earned money. I’m researching how and what to do right now, and I’m as slow as molasses, so don’t expect to see any changes for a few weeks.
I won’t, however, be doing a lot of the things that I’ve seen some other bloggers do for the sake of filthy lucre. Not that I’m above all that, but this blog is always going to be a personal blog, which means I don’t want my readers wondering if I really mean what I’m saying. I assure you, I always say exactly what I think. It’s a weakness of mine. Anyway, here are my advertising guidelines for now. I’ll let you know if they change:
- I am not going to do pay-per-post. I write for me. Sometimes I write for products or services I like. But I’m not going to write about products for money. If samples count as payment, then my review posts are exceptions to this rule. I like reviewing products. It’s fun for me, and I enjoy doing giveaways as a way of thanking my readers for showing up.
- I probably won’t post affiliate links, just because that amounts to an endorsement of a product. An endorsement is a commitment. I hate commitments. (I’ve changed my mind on this one. I said “probably”, and I was wrong. I like some things. Why not try to sell them?)
- I am going to put a PayPal tip jar up, and you will be welcome to contribute a few pennies or dollars to the upkeep of this blog and its caretaker if you like.
- I’m going to post my Amazon wishlist, just in case someone has too much money and would like to buy me something. (A girl can dream, right?)
- I’m going to join at least one ad network. I’m still looking into that.
- I am not going to encourage my readers to click links. I’m not a salesperson.
Anyway, I’m letting you know so you can protest now, if you have objections. Not that I care what you people think, but speak now if you have thoughts on the subject. Also, bloggers, let me know what has worked for you, if you have time to leave a comment. Links to your own posts about monetization would be appreciated!

Oh Cindy,
You make me smile – You really are a sweetie!
I think it is great that you do not let blogging take over your life and I like this post!
For me I really like posting reviews/giveaways only one day each week because I do not want my blog to just be a billboard (with the exception of this week of course – I decided to do a week of giveaways to try to get more traffic…seems many people are on holiday and not commenting as much).
I have enjoyed getting to know you on twitter – and again, I wish you the best of Luck! I’m always here to support YOU!
PS. If you really find a way to make some pennies – let me in on it. I refuse to post ugly/not family friendly ads which makes earning money harder
(hugs)

Jody, I’m in the same boat. More than one review or giveaway a week and I feel dirty. LOL. There’s nothing wrong with that kind of blog, but it’s not the direction I really want to take right now.

Hooray for your new blog, I’m so excited for you and to see what you have in store for readers. I hear you with the reviews and giveaways. I kind of got sucked in by the glitz of it all and now I’m just trying to keep my head above the water with all of the products I’ve received. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I miss blogging about fun things, tips, and life in general, so I’m slowly trying to get back to more of that and less reviews and giveaways, to make it more of an even balance. Of course I have my family blog too, so that takes up time as well. Oh if there were only more hours in the day and I could start over. I’m excited for you though and can’t wait to see where this blog goes!! xo
I have noticed, MommyB! You have so much going on. I know I wouldn’t be able to handle it, especially with a little bitty baby like you have (and I’m about to). I love your blog, and not just for the giveaways! Good luck getting the PR people to go away. Joking. Who doesn’t love the PR people, right? Hmmm. Maybe *that’s* the joke. I’m never really sure, when it comes to PR.

I will tell you, hosting reviews and giveaways can become exhausting. I use to post one a day or more, but I got burned out. I post a few a week, this week will be a little more because I am going to be catch up. But, what I enjoy doing most is blogging the stories of my life, things we do, how I feel. Those are the types of posts I like and who knows, in the long run I might get out of review posts all together. I really like forming relationships with my readers, visiting their blogs, leaving comments. I have created many great friendships with other bloggers, some I have met, others who knows, maybe one day I will meet.
As far as paid posts, I do them. I have only wrote approx 4 paid posts. I do not take every single one that is thrown my way. Yesterday I was offered 9. I accepted 0. They have to be relevant to my blog and I have to really like the company that offers them. I am not going to sell out to something I do not believe in or feel my readers would be interested in. Paid posts do help. I can use the money and you have learned, blogging can be expensive.
Good luck, I hope your blog brings you what you are looking for, but most importantly, I hope you enjoy it.
